Chickens. Really. You had to give her chickens.

Technically I meant to give her a chicken.

Well, she has a whole flock now.

A chicken, Draco? Why?

Well that is Issy's fault. I cannot be blamed if she is far more stupid than I had come to think. I clearly said a chicken. I'm almost positivie I said one chicken.

And because... she wanted one.

You can't give her everything she wants!

I can perfectly well give her a chicken. I can't see by what standards a chicken is beyond the reasonable limits of what I might give her just because she wants it.

It didn't even cost you anything, if we're coming back to the matter of how much I cost you again.

Oh, for fuck's sake.

Look, she's three. We have a bloody zoo here already.

I didn't bring the ridiculous dog onto the property. I am responsible for precisely one phoenix and I have, I suppose, partial responsibility for one cat and one snake.

Which is never in the house, obviously.

Unlike the chickens.

I wish you wouldn't say that. But I know. I would prefer they weren't in the house, but she finds them so much... fun. And at least they're confined to the conservatory, although I fear it will never be the same again.

They're chickens. Not pets.

I don't imagine you would say that to Hagrid, would you?

She'll grow tired of them in a day or two, I'm sure.

Or she'll obsess about them for months and we'll be entirely unable to go into the conservatory.

You can't indulge her like this.

Why not? They're chickens, not... Death Eaters.

I just want her to be happy. If she wants to see a chicken then I cannot see why not. It's entirely accidental that it turned out so inconveniently.

Which is, it seems, the story of my life just now.

You spoil her too much.

Come here.

I make her as happy as I can. Why that has to be understood so negatively I really don't know.

[info]quidditch_prat

I know. But it won't kill her to be told no from time to time. It's good for her, even.

Why is it good for her? People say this all the time but they never have a good reason for it.

Scorpius enjoys the chickens as well.

Because it makes her understand that she's not going to get everything she wants when she wants it, which prepares her to deal with disappointment in her life.

Why on earth should a three year old need to contemplate future disappointment? There's time enough for her to be disappointed, Harry.

And she wanted to show Scorpius a chicken and I think it is right to encourage her impulse to help and amuse him.

She doesn't need to contemplate it! She just needs to get used to the idea that she's not going to get everything she wants. I don't want her to be a complete terror.

*a sigh*

I am quite willing for her to be a complete terror. Better that than the opposite.

And she is very nearly four. All too soon she will have to mix with other children. Children who are not family. Then she will learn disappointment enough for both you and Sever...

I just want her to be happy now.
